A standardized test, the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL™) assesses the English proficiency of applicants, whose native language does not happen to be English. It tests the ability to understand North American English. Most educational institutes in US and Canada (approximately 2400) ask applicants for their TOEFL™ Scores. Most applicants take the TOEFL™ test as a prerequisite for admission into colleges and universities where English is used or required. In addition, many governments, licensing, and certification agencies, and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL™ scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language.
The TOEFL™ Internet-based Test (TOEFL™ iBT) tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. The structure of the TOEFL™ iBT is as follows:
READING (54-72 min) (30-40 questions) (0-30 scoring scale) 3-4 passages from academic texts; approx 700 words long with 10 questions per passage.
LISTENING (41-57 min) (28-39 questions) (0-30 scoring scale) 3-4 lectures each 3-5 min long with 6 questions each; 2-3 conversations, each 3 minutes long with 5 questions each.
SPEAKING (17 min) (4 tasks) (0-30 scoring scale) 1 task to express an opinion on a topic; 3 tasks to speak based on what is read and listened to.
WRITING (50 min) (2 tasks) (0-5 points converted to 0-30 scoring scale) 1 task to write based on what is read or listened to; 1 task to support an opinion on a topic.
The US-based “Educational Testing Service” (ETS), develops and administers the TOEFL™. ETS is responsible for setting questions, conducting the test, and sending score reports to each examinee. For detailed information about toefl itp, please refer to the official website of TOEFL™ www.toefl.org

The TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language, assesses the English language ability of candidates looking at studying in English-speaking countries. It is one of the two major language tests accepted across the world, the other one being the IELTS.
As opposed to the IELTS, which is a 2 hours 45 minutes test, the TOEFL takes 4 hours to complete. The four sections are the same, focusing on Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking skills. Each section receives a score of a maximum of 30, and the 4 tests are then added towards the final score, which is out of 120. Each university has its own required minimum score, which can range from as low as 61 to as high as 110.
The TOEFL is administered as an Internet-Based Test, although specific locations around the world still use the Paper Based Test. The TOEFL score is valid for up to two years.
TOEFL test is available in 2 different formats.
- TOEFL IBT (Internet-based test) that is being brought in around the world measures listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The most commonly used format.
- TOEFL ITP(Institutional Testing Program), is the one you should not consider if you plan to study abroad.
Struggling to do the TOEFL IBT?
Check with your local university of choice to see if they accept the TOEFL ITP.
In the UAE, this exam is commonly known as “the local TOEFL”. It is only used by certain local higher education facilities to test their own students and is NOT accepted by other local higher education institutions as proof of their English ability nor by international universities. For those, you will need to take the TOEFL ITP.
ITP’s questions and content are very similar to the TOEFL Paper-based exam. Assessments are made in:
- Listening
- Structure ( Grammar )
- Reading comprehension
The scores may vary: 200-500 is the range for the beginner/intermediate level scale and 310-677 corresponds to an intermediate/advanced level scale.
ITP tests are conducted on the campus of the individual relevant universities or can be done at AmidEast either in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
